A piece is made in a single cut, worked until whatever it takes is done — the embroidery, the trim, the lining — then photographed and put on the shop page at a price. A piece begins as cloth and one cut. Cotton and cotton blend under the shirts, crepe in three of the four coats, Najaf fabric named in a long kimono, a red abaya and a sheer cover-up, Syrian Saya silk in the vests. The cloth decides the cut, and the cut decides what hand work the piece can take.A piece begins as cloth and one cut. Then the hand work. A Saya silk patch is set on a shirt front and finished with black beaded tassels. A vest is lined right through and bound along the open front with contrasting silk necktie fabric. One shirt carries a handmade Tatreez panel, worked in the traditional Palestinian technique, and the geometry in it has a name the listing gives it — the Palestinian pine tree. On the white linen cover-up the embroidered evil eye is centred on the back, and the sheer pink one carries the Khamsa there. The listings say what the motifs stand for in plain words — protection from negative energy, blessings, strength.
